The word shi‘a lexically means ‘follower,’ and originally referred to
those who followed Imam Ali b. Abi Talib and who recognised him as
the Prophet’s divinely appointed successor. Today it generally refers to
the body of Muslims who recognise the twelve Imams from Imam Ali (a)
to the rest of the Imams (a) from his and Fatimah (a), the Prophet’s
daughter’s lineage
The major beliefs among Muslims and also among adherents
of other Abrahamic faiths are the same. These include the
belief in the unity of God (tawhid), divine prophethood
(nubuwwa) and resurrection (ma‘ād). We all share the belief
that there is only One creator, by Whom we have all been
created. Out of His Mercy and Wisdom, He provides us with
extra guidance through revelation, so He sent prophets. We
also believe that there will be an eternal life after
resurrection, and that we will be accountable for what we
have done, and if we have acted and believed virtuously we
will have everlasting bliss and salvation. These precepts are
shared by all Abrahamic faiths and both Sunni and Shi‘a1
Muslims alike.
