Throughout this work, a simplified version of the
International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES)
transliteration guide has been used. The Arabic letter
ʿayn (ع) has been shown by a single opening quotation
mark (ʿ), as in Jumʿah. The sign of hamzah (ء) is
represented by a single closing quotation mark (ʾ), as in
Qurʾan. Initial hamzah is not marked, like asbab. The
Arabic letter of wav (و) has been represented by (w), as
in wahy, while the Persian letter vav (و) has been shown
by (v), as in ravish. The ta marbutah (ة) at the end of
words such as al - Jumuʿat is represented by the letter ‘h’.
All the Qurʾanic verses are from Ali Quli Qaraʾi’s
translation published by ICAS in London in 2005
Saeid Sobhani was born into a senior clerical family in
the holy city of Qum in 1963. He completed his high
school education while simultaneously undertaking
spiritual and religious training under the guidance of
his father, Grand Ayatollah Ja’far Sobhani.
For two decades, from 1982 to 2002, he attended
the lectures of eminent scholars of Qum and mastered
such disciplines as Arabic literature, logic, Islamic
philosophy, exegesis of the Qur’an, History of
Heterodoxy in Islam (al - milal wa al - nihal), the science
of narrators and narrations (‘ilm al - rijal wa al - dirayah),
theology (kalam), Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and the
principles of jurisprudence (usul al - fiqh).
